Downtown Las Vegas Casino to Open More Rooms

Circa Resort & Casino is a casino and hotel resort in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada, right on the Fremont Street Experience. Previously, the property was home to the Las Vegas Club hotel-casino, the Mermaids Casino, and the Glitter Gulch strip club. The latest hotel-casino in downtown Las Vegas is set to expand with the addition of more rooms this autumn. Circa, the very first casino to be built in the downtown area since 1980, is set to add 106 rooms, four of which will be suites, by the end of October this year, according to resort CEO Derek Stevens.

Who is Derek Steven?

Derek Stevens is known as an executive who interacts with guests on a regular basis. He often roams the casino floors, chatting with customers, a rarity among his colleagues. He also has a penchant for sports betting and is renowned for placing big wagers on games. During the pandemic, he handed out 1,700 free plane tickets to Las Vegas residents to help the local economy.

Stevens got his start working as a valet along the Detroit River. In 1993, he took over as CEO of Cold Heading Company after the previous CEO left. He relocated to Las Vegas in 2006 and started investing, acquiring a sizable amount of stock in Rivera's former parent company.

Stevens and Gregory teamed up to buy several casinos during the 2000s. They bought the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino in 2008, Fitzgeralds in 2011, the Las Vegas Club in 2015, and Mermaids Casino in 2016. The two later knocked down the Las Vegas Club and Mermaids to make way for Circa Resort & Casino, which opened at the end of 2020. It was the biggest project of his career so far.

You probably won't see any construction cranes at the top of the property. Stevens explained that the accommodations will be developed on four floors that were shelled out when the building was first constructed so that they could see how customers would respond to different product options. They thought it would be a good idea to see what room types were in higher demand. It's a pretty standard practice for new hotels.

After about three years in business, Stevens found that the sunset suite was their highest demand product. It's a nearly 1,200-square-foot western-facing suite. The view is incredible, you can see the Vegas valley from every angle. Stevens explained that the new rooms are the last stage of the Circa development. The second stage was the ballroom and meeting space, which was completed in September 2022. There are also three other floors that are ready for future development.

Circa has been developing additional hotel capacity for roughly a year, according to Stevens. He added that this fall was a great time to add the rooms, as the NFL season, as well as other sports and events such as the Formula One Grand Prix and the new Neon City Festival, a music and food festival in downtown Las Vegas during the F1 weekend, would increase demand for the property. That means the investment and room addition are now on track. Steven says that everything kind of comes together.

Legacy Circa Club in LA

The Legacy Club at Circa was inspired by the folks who helped build Las Vegas. It's on the 60th floor, and it's got a rooftop club lounge with a great view of the downtown skyline. The building pays tribute to the people who helped build Las Vegas. There are metal busts lining the halls and spirited black-and-white photos framing the entrance. The club's main attraction is a display of 1,000 ounces of gold.

You can soak up the atmosphere inside or enjoy the sunset from the lounge's outdoor terrace. There's a great selection of drinks, with the mixology teams putting their own spin on the classics. The menu features a build-your-own Old Fashioned and some great drinks for sharing.
